This is a quick project I came up with to enable me to use the IPA without continually inserting characters from the character map in Windows, or without being constrained to using Microsoft Office tools that include the symbol palette. It should run on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Vista for the (Intel) x86, x64, AMD and IA64 platforms. It was created using the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator v1.4 and Windows Character Map. It is designed to be used only with the Charis SIL font available at this page at sil.org. If you do not have the Charis SIL font installed on your computer, some of the text below may not appear correctly.

Installation

To install this keyboard layout:
1. First download the most recent version listed at the bottom of the page. (Click
here to jump to the download link.
)
2. Extract the files to a new directory.
3. Run setup.exe.
4. Wait until it says that installation is complete.
5. Click Start, Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, Keyboard and Languages.
6. Click 'Change Keyboards'.
7. Verify that 'Broad English IPA Symbols for Charis SIL font.' appears under English (United States) > Keyboard. (If not, click Add and manually add it.)
8. Click 'Language Bar'.
9. Choose 'Docked in the taskbar'.

Usage

To use the keyboard layout, click on the keyboard icon next to your clock on the taskbar, then choose the Charis SIL keyboard. Begin typing! See the keyboard layouts below (also included in the .zip file) for character mapping.
